Getting started (10 minutes)

  1. In Settings, choose your pay frequency and the first day of a known pay period.
  2. Set each employee's category: Service (servers, bartenders: the 8% rule applies), Support (bussers, hosts: receive tip-pool shares), No allocation (valet, doorman, delivery, coat check), or Not tracked (kitchen, management).
  3. Check the Clover order types that can give rise to a tip. Take-out and delivery are excluded by default, as Revenu Québec requires.
  4. If you run a tip pool, enable the automatic tip pool and enter the percentage.

Every pay period

  1. Collect each employee's declaration of cash tips not recorded in Clover, and enter it on the Pay period page.
  2. Print the registers and have each employee sign theirs (they keep a copy).
  3. Download the payroll report and send it to your payroll provider or accountant: the “total to add to wages” is the taxable amount; “tips to pay” is what you owe each employee.
  4. Close the period. Closed periods feed the annual summary.

Questions

How is the allocated amount calculated? If the tips an employee received on their eligible sales (before tip-pool sharing) are below 8% of those sales (before taxes), the difference is allocated. Example: $2,000 of sales, $90 of tips → threshold $160 → $70 allocated.

Who is the server of a sale? The employee on the Clover order (the one mainly responsible for the table). You can switch to the employee who took the payment in Settings.

Does the app file anything with Revenu Québec? No. It produces your records and figures; you or your accountant file the RL-1 slips and the TP-1086.R.1 return (due the last day of February).

Is this tax advice? No. Have your accountant validate your settings once.
